“First Draft On Demand” Readings
When: As requested
Open to: Any Affiliate with a completed draft
When an Affiliate has completed a full draft of a full-length play, a long one-act or a series of related shorter plays, they can request a closed, unrehearsed reading of the entire work.
The reading may be held on any day at any time, subject to availability of space and actors. Typically, FDOD readings are held at 7:30 p.m., with the cast call at 6 p.m. for a read-thru and meal with the playwright.
To arrange a First Draft reading, you must:
- Notify the Managing Artistic Director of the date(s) you have in mind.
- E-mail a copy of the script to the Managing Artistic Director with specific casting requirements.
- E-mail a copy of the script to each participating actor, person reading stage directions and moderator of the talkback session one week in advance of the reading.
- Provide each participating actor, and the person reading stage directions, with a clean, bound copy of the full text on the night of the reading, with the stage directions to be read highlighted or underlined in each script.
- Arrange for a meal, including beverages, for the actors during the reading (the actors receive only $20 for their time).
- Invite anyone you would like to hear the reading.
- Understand the procedure for a talkback following the reading. Moderated feedback sessions for First Draft readings are required.
- Provide the moderator with any additional questions for talkback in writing prior to the reading.
WTP will pay $20 per actor up to four (4) actors, including a person to read stage directions. Any necessary additional actors will be paid by the playwright.
WTP's moderator is Betty Hart. WTP and the playwright will split the moderator fee. However, the playwright is welcome to hire their own moderator, at no cost to WTP.
