The Rub by Dottie Blais
August 11, 2007 at 3.00pm, August 12, 2007 at 7.30pm
Shortly after Thelma's mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she breaks up with her boyfriend and her father marries her mother's business partner. Confused and depressed, Thelma identifies with Hamlet and, though fearful about what lies beyond death, makes several half-hearted, sadly comic attempts at suicide. In Thelma's world, tragedy and comedy blend in surprising ways to remind us how complex and compelling human lives can be.

About the Author:
Dottie Blais' works have been produced both in community and professional theatres from Michigan to Georgia, including an Off-Off Broadway production at the American Theatre of Actors. Dottie currently teaches English and Creative Writing at Gainesville State College. She and her husband, Roger, live in Lawrenceville, GA.
The Rub was written for Dottie's students, especially for those who grudgingly entered Hamlet's world but quickly identified with him and were transformed by the experience.
From the Director
Every play you've ever seen was once "new." It began as a spark in someone's head, or gut, and by a strange journey through doubt and courage, through tradition and experiment, through love both selfish and selfless, it came into being. Birth is a marvelous, if painful, process, and often the thing that is born is not what was originally intended. One idea can start the spark for countless others, and the mutations and permutations are endless. The fire fed by the many sparks that go into the birth of a new work of theatre is full of both light and heat, and exciting to be part of.
